Stratosphere is the debut studio album by American space-rock band Duster. The album was released February 24, 1998, on the Up Records label in the United States. The album was primarily written and recorded by members Clay Parton and Canaan Dove Amber, with Jason Albertini contributing drums to three tracks. The band subsequently released the Contemporary Movement album in 2000. The 7th track from the CD version of the album, Echo, Bravo, is omitted from the original LP. Duster - Stratosphere 1998. This is Duster's first LP, Stratosphere, released on February 24, 1998 via Up - Stratosphere review: Building blocks from the sky. Formed in 1996 by multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton and Dove Amber, Duster showed us their own form of lo-fi genius with the release of Stratosphere in 1998. Their debut was recorded on a four-track, a feature that gives it an unparalleled aspect of nostalgia. Upon starting Stratosphere, the receiver is lulled into a hypnotic state with the chiming and wah-ing of the opening track, Moon Age. This intriguing start is followed up by Heading for the Door , one of the more stellar songs on the album featuring a noteworthy chord progression. Amber and E. Stratosphere is mainly recorded at their home on four track. At times, they sound like Pavement and other times like Seely with higher pitched male vocals. Stratosphere demonstrates their guitar-based focus, riding on the flow of duel picking guitar melodies. With many guitars switching dynamic roles and riding on tunings, Duster sounds a bit like early Sonic Youth. Bass and drums act as the bottom, while guitars playfully find their melody by feeding off one another, throwing notes back and forth. Dusters debut studio album Stratosphere is widely considered to be their magnum opus and is often regarded as the most important slowcore album of all time. Before embarking on side projects such as Helvetia, the band decided to put their talents to use on a solo effort, combining lo-fi indie aesthetics with searing guitars and depressive undertones and lyrics. Years after they debuted, Duster managed to gain traction on the internet, which led to Stratosphere suddenly becoming a cornerstone of. Genre: Slowcore. Stratosphere is a distant, spacious post rock album that feels oh so cozy. I'd say it gave me the same vibes as American Football's first album with an added space twist, and it's absolutely beautiful. A few cuts can feel a bit too short to bring their ideas into full force, but the majority of the album is so good it's easy to forgive that nitpick. • There’s a reissue that’s on a lot of websites right now

  • I have a cover only for this record, in need of the record itself. If anyone has a record only they are willing to sell please message me. Thanks

  • Reissues available for pre-order via Numero Group in a 4xLP boxset:

  • Reissues 'eventually' coming on Numero Group :)from the horses mouth

  • Pretty sure it will happen. i just had confirmation from a reliable source :)

  • fake_blues Reissues 'eventually' coming on Numero Group :)from the horses mouth I hope this is true

  • but WHEN!? This is the perfect type of album to drop onto the table and kick back.

  • PSA: DUSTER RELEASING NEW MUSIC They now have an instagram page

  • Any recommendations for albums/bands containing similar spaced out melancholy guitar melodies and groans which possess the simultaneous heftiness/weightlessness of this album? I struggle to find much music that is able to produce the distancing yet earthing effect of this album (maybe only Codeine).

  • track star "communication breaks" album. also from bay area @ same time. probably were friends with duster or at least hated them

  • Bedhead, Low, Codeine, Idaho, the first two Death Cab albums...Red House Painters are more lush and full compared to the production on most of these artists but they have a similar melancholy melodic sense.

  • Eiafuawn. It's actually one of the guys from Duster. It is truly a worthy follow up.

  • Peaer's a good one, even lists Duster as an influence

  • are affiliated with duster and some are not enjoy

  • Bedhead - What fun life was and the album Beheaded

  • Try the album Love Tera by the band Eric's Trip. Also there's a Duster off-shoot band called Valium Aggelein and they have an extremely rare album called Hier Kommt Der Schwartze Mond.

  • Thanks! Appreciate the recommendations, already like Horse Jumper of Love

  • Helvetia of course!... as well as: Haunter - Worm, Spencer Radcliffe - Looking in, Horse Jumper Of Love, and hundred heads - the expanding planet are a few I always come back to when I want to listen to something in the same type of category. Give 'em a listen if you haven't already! They're all similar but different at the same time...

  • Please Repress This Wonderful Album !!!! (and any unreleased Duster recordings)

  • And I spoke to Jason after a Helvetia show at the end of 2015 and he said that Duster was going to be working on new music, now that kids were out of the way for Clay. Kids DO ruin everything.

  • Kids ruined the OG lineup of Modest Mouse too, that's why I'm not having any

  • I emailed Numero group a few years ago to look into Duster. After they did Codeine and then Bedhead boxsets, I figured they would do a good job (they are solid, sturdy and very comprehensive). They also did great work with the Unwound compilations, I thought.

  • And lo and behold, Duster is now on Numero:

  • I figure the more of us asking for a repress the more likely it will happen.

  • Repress imminent, Helvetia is putting out their last record and then Duster is doing represses, touring, and a new album

  • Where did you get this information? If it’s true I’m stoked

  • in desparate need of this record [ten words blah blah]

  • i'm very much longing for a decent duster boxset that has the 2 albums + 4 LP's or so of singles & rarities compiled.

  • . . . . looks like you fished your wish

  • Light in the attic just released the Acetone comp, Duster seems right up there alley.

  • i guess good artist want us to suffer, we need a reissue atleast!!

  • Eh there'll probably be one at some point. It's not like they have a ton of means to easily reissue their stuff, and Jason is doing stuff with Built to Spill and Helvetia. I'd bet that they'll make a new album first!

  • What the hell is up with these current $250+ prices

  • I've seen people decline $200 offers.... . . . .

  • Saint Marie Records should do a reissue of this in their next shoegaze classic reissue series. It'd be part 4. Heck they did reissues for Secret Shine and The Emerald Down. I'd also throw in The Bethany Curve for a reissue as well.

  • We need a repress very badly. Preferably with Echo, Bravo on it.

  • Don't buy from the current seller that is selling for $325-ish, they are overcharging and they flat out called me a troll and to "fuck off" when I itold them the price was too high.

  • I understand users here are trying to make money, but you definitely do not have to be a prick about it.EDIT: the "you" i'm referring to is the person who is selling the Stratosphere record for $270+

  • = = = = = = = = = = =

  • Yoooo, are there any other copies of this on the web (or in record stores??)? I'm going crazy!! I live in Chicago btw, don't know if that helps

  • Is it just my copy, or is there a lot of surface noise on this release?

  • Mine doesn't have too much. It's there, but not overwhelming.

  • Duster is bringing you in a painful research of liberty.

  • Terrific album. This and Contemporary Movement desperately need to be reissued.

  • This is one of the most underrated Bay Area albums ever.

  • Everybody who has heard it, as far as I know, loves it to death. Isn't that all that matters?

  • Is Echo, Bravo really not on the vinyl edition?
