Leigh Brackett was one of the top 10 writers of early pulp sci Fi storiesExcit. Read more. This story reminds me of Conan the Barbarian or John Carter of Mars. This seems to be a continuation of a series the author wrote, since there references to Mr. Stark being on Mercury under another name as a child. In this story he is in the North of Mars, with a dying companion. The companion gives Mr. Stark swear to take it back, which Mr. Stark does so swear. On the trip to that home town, Mr. Stark is captured by a loose collection of tribal warriors,who happen to be headed to that same town. The story starts with Stark is taking his friend Camar to his birthplace, Kushat, in the north of Mars to die. Unfortunately Camar dies before they can get there from a bullet wound he received that he took for Stark. They each featured her Mercury-born hero, Eric John Stark, and were published in the pulp magazine Planet Stories. Leigh Douglass Brackett December 7, 1915 March 18, 1978 was an American writer, particularly of science fiction, and has been referred to as the Queen of Space Opera. She was also a screenwriter, known for her work on such films as The Big Sleep 1946, Rio Bravo 1959 and The Long Goodbye 1973.
