Recording Location. Auditorium de Lyon, France. Submit Corrections. Album Moods. Ravel: Orchestral Works, Vol. The Valses nobles et sentimentales is a suite of waltzes composed by Maurice Ravel. The piano version was published in 1911, and an orchestral version was published in 1912. The title was chosen in homage to Franz Schubert, who had released collections of waltzes in 1823 entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. Maurice Ravel 18751937 Orchestral Works , 2. Maurice Ravel was born in 1875 in the small coastal village of Ciboure in the Basque region of France. Originally for piano, Ravels Valses nobles et sentimentales were avowedly written in imitation of Schubert, with the seventh waltz, according to Ravel, the most characteristic. Ravel wrote his piano Le tombeau de Couperin between 1914 and 1917. It serves, in its form as a dance suite, as a tribute to François Couperin, the great French composer of the early eighteenth century, and, more generally, as he claimed, to the French music of that period, but also as a tribute, in the dedication of each piece, to friends who fell in the war. Maurice Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales present a vivid mixture of atmospheric. Heard here in an orchestration by Marius Constant, Gaspard de la nuit is Ravel's. Lyon National Orchestra Leonard Slatkin, Orchestral Works 2 Naxos Orchestre National de Lyon Leonard Slatkin. In this, their second recording of orchestral works by Maurice Ravel, the Orchestre National de Lyon led by the great Leonard Slatkin gives another interesting and professional performance of his early 20th century compositions, all of which, except La valse , were originally written for piano. Both Valses nobles et sentimentales and Le tombeau de Couperin were orchestrated by Ravel shortly after they were written, allowing comparison of their impact as solo piano and, later orchestrated works. Maurice Ravel's Valses nobles et sentimentales present a vivid mixture of atmospheric impressionism, intense expression and modernist wit. His fascination with the waltz is further explored in La Valse, a mysterious evocation of a vanished imperial epoch. Heard here in an orchestration by Marius Constant, Gaspard de la nuit is Ravel's response to the other-worldly poems of Aloysius Bertrand, and the dance suite Le tombeau de Couperin is a tribute to friends who fell in the war of 1914-18 as well as a great 18th century musical forbear. 3 December 2013 - Published on .
