The tenor and guitarist perform Schubert's cycle at the 1978 Salzburg schöne Müllerin Op. 795, is a song cycle by Franz Schubert based on poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the earliest extended song cycle to be widely performed. Considered one of Schubert's most important works, it is the first of his two seminal cycles the other being his later Winterreise, and a pinnacle of Lied. It is widely performed and recorded. Ragossnig is a superb guitarist with an agile technique and a complete command of tonal colors. Plus, he is a superb accompanist. He's with Schreier in the exaltation of Mein, with him in the anger of Der Jäger, with him in the despair of Trockne Blumen, and with him - consolingly and compassionately - in the final Des Baches Wiegenlied. This is well worth hearing for the performance, for the singer, for the accompanist, and for the alternative transcription. Recognized as one of Schuberts masterpieces, this song cycle tells the story of a wandering miller who follows a brook to a mill and meets the beautiful millers daughter the title translates as The Beautiful Millers Daughter and falls in love with him. However, shes cool to his advances, and she later falls in love with a handsome hunter. In despair, the miller drowns himself in the brook. Schubert: Die Schöne Müllerin. Josef for Voice & String Quartet. Schubert came across the schöne Müllerin poems in late 1822. He had ambitions to create songs with a grander scale and emotional scope. This cycle of linked poems drew Schubert's attention immediately, and occupied much of his attention in the year of 1823. He published this cycle of songs in five volumes in the following year as his Op. Maurice Brown makes the case that the five books of the original publication divide the story into five acts. Act 1 songs 1-4 tells the story of a miller, merrily wandering through the countryside until he comes to a brook and is drawn along its pat
