More Oar: A Tribute to the Skip Spence Album is a 1999 tribute album completed shortly before and released shortly after the death of Moby Grape founding member Skip Spence. The album contains cover versions by various artists of Spence's music from his Oar album, released in 1969, presented in the same order as on the original album. The album also contains a hidden bonus track of Spence's last known recording, Land of the Sun, which was originally commissioned for the X-Files soundtrack, Songs in. His 1969 album Oar is a psych-folk classic, as well as a collector's item, ranking as one of Columbia's lowest-selling albums when it was originally released. This tribute marks the 30th anniversary of Oar's release and features performances from Spence fans as prominent as Robert Plant, Beck, and Tom Waits, and as underground as the Minus Five, Flying Saucer Attack, and Outrageous Cherry. Producer , Liner Notes Bill Bentley. Written-By Alexander Lee Spence. Лучше не стало. SKIP SPENCE, who died earlier this year, was the American equivalent of Syd Barrett: a former member of Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape, the songs on his solo album Oar were, so legend goes, written during his six-month stay in a psychiatric ward, upon release from which he rode a motorcycle in his pyjamas straight to Nashville and recorded the lot, solo, in one day. The resulting parade of whimsy and paranoia has become a cult favourite. The strain of vulnerable innocence in Spence's work is gently brought out here in Plant's winsome, acoustic Little Hands. This More Oar: A Tribute to Alexander Skip Spence album was released in 1999 and featured titles like Little Hands, Cripple Creek and Books of Moses from Robert Plant, Mark Lanegan and Tom Waits. Year: 1999. Mostly good re-workings of Skip Spence's original album. Inevitably not everything will ever satisfy everybody when a compilation of covers is released, but if you like the original album there should be enough here to keep you entertained. Robert Plant, Mark Lanegan, Tom Waits and Diesel Park West all deliver tracks true to the spirit of the original LP, and the Ophelias give Lawrence of Euphoria a decent re-boot. More Oar: A Tribute to the Skip Spence Album is a track-by-track remake of Oar, the classic 1969 album from psychedelic pioneer Skip Spence, a onetime member of Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane. The album also includes an unbilled 90s recording from the singer. And Engine 54 contribute a puzzling ska track thats unrelated to both Spence and everything else on More Oar. Still, more often than not, More taps into the spirit of Oar - no easy feat. Compared with Spences work, the songs of the late alt-country innovator Gram Parsons are about as hard to cover as Row, Row, Row Your Boat
